Google’s $2.7 bn fine highlights the importance of ‘search neutrality’ and preventing gatekeeping

By Asheeta Regidi The European Commission recently issued a hefty fine of 2.42 billion euro (around $2.7 bn) on Google. Google was found to breach antitrust rules by promoting its comparison shopping service, ‘Google Shopping’ over other similar services, abusing its power as a dominant online search engine. ‘Search’ neutrality and preventing gatekeeping Google’s dominant position among search engines is without question. Our dependence on Google means that a lot of our choices, the websites we visit, information we see, products we buy and more is determined by the search results…

Google Photos’ new sharing features are a bit much, but families might enjoy them

Google Photos is upgrading its cloud storage service with a couple of new automated sharing features today that might be a bit too clever for their own good. The first is actually kinda neat: a new Sharing tab will show you pictures from notable events that Photos thinks you might want to send only to certain people. For example, it picked up a bunch of shots from my lunch with friends at a Korean joint and suggested I share it with one of them. Your recipients can then add pictures…

As Google gears up to challenge EU, it must remember Microsoft’s decade-long regulatory battle

Google’s clash with EU antitrust enforcers has echoes of Microsoft’s decade-long regulatory battle, a legacy that parent company Alphabet should bear in mind as it considers challenging the Commission, lawyers and fund managers said. After a seven-year investigation prompted by scores of complaints from rivals, the European Commission hit Google with a record 2.4 billion euro ($2.73 billion) fine for favouring its own shopping service and an order to treat rival services the same way it treats its own products. “When I saw this yesterday, it absolutely rang a bell,”…

Uber claims that it never stole self-driving car technology from Waymo

Uber Technologies said it never told a self-driving car executive to download files from his former employer, Alphabet Inc’s Waymo unit, according to a court filing in a contentious trade secret lawsuit. Alphabet’s Waymo claimed in a lawsuit earlier this year that Anthony Levandowski downloaded more than 14,000 confidential files before leaving to set up a self-driving truck company, which Uber acquired soon after. Uber has fired Levandowski. He is not a defendant in the case, but his actions, and what Uber executives knew about them, are at the centre…

Canadian court orders Google to change global search results

Canadian Supreme Court today ruled against Google in an intellectual property case, despite the fact that the company wasn’t a defendant in the initial case. The highest courts in Canada decided that the sovereignty of an ‘interlocutory injunction’ (a cease-and-desist order) on the behalf of a Canadian communications hardware company was worth bringing about a global-wide gag order for the US based Google search-engine. The ruling was meant to stop an allegedly fake company named Datalink Technologies Gateways from counterfeiting and profiting off of several network devices and technologies owned by…
