NASA’s Curiosity rover has a pet rock on Mars

Mars is probably a pretty lonely place.  The red planet is littered with rusty red rocks and, as far as we know, devoid of any kind of life. But even so, rovers still roam the surface of the world on humanity’s behalf, making their solitary treks along previously unexplored paths.  And sometimes, they make friends.  SEE ALSO: NASA photo captures the loneliness of the Mars Curiosity rover NASA’s Curiosity rover — which has been exploring the red planet’s Gale Crater since 2012 — appears to have a little pet rock…

ISRO’s Mars Orbiter Mission: Five important results from a thousand days of scientific observations

ISRO’s Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM), also known as Mangalyaan completed 1,000 Earth days in orbit around the red planet on 19 June, 2017. The planned mission duration was only 6 months, but the low cost mission continues to make observations. There is about 13 kg of propellant left. MOM has already achieved all of its mission goals, and will study Mars with its scientific instruments for the remainder of its life. Mars, as imaged by Mangalyaan. ISRO’s Mars Orbiter Mission completes 1000 days in orbit, continues observing the red planet

On June 19, 2017 the Mars Orbiter Mission (MoM) has completed 1,000 Earth days, or 973.24 Mars Sols — Martian Solar Days, in orbit around the red planet. MoM has completed 388 orbits, and continues to take observations that has lead to the publication of several scientific research papers. The original planned mission duration was only six months. The Mars Colour Camera has captured more than 715 images of Mars, some of which were used to compile an Atlas of Mars. Antrix employees providing ground support to the Mars orbiter Mission by Isro. NASA’s Orion spacecraft with launch abort system passes key safety test

NASA said its Orion spacecraft, which will take astronauts to deep space destinations, did well in a key safety test. At the Promontory, Utah, facility of Orion subcontractor Orbital ATK, engineers tested the abort motor for Orion’s launch abort system (LAS) this week, firing the 17-foot tall motor for five seconds, NASA said. The motor was fastened to a vertical test stand with its nozzles pointed toward the sky for the test. It produced enough thrust to lift 66 large SUVs off the ground and helped qualify the system for…
