The OnePlus 5 has finally been launched, in a short and crisp event. Unlike previous launches, this was not a VR launch. Fans will be able to pick up the device in “pop up” events around the world instead of a VR store. The OnePlus 5 will retail for $479 in the US and €499 in Europe. These are the starting prices of the device, as there are RAM and storage variations. The specifications were in line with the number of leaks so far.
The phone has a 64 GB variant with 6 GB of RAM and a 128 GB variant with 8 GB of RAM. The RAM used is the LPDDR4X, which allows for 20 percent more battery efficiency. The phone is powered by a top of the line Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor clocked at 2.4 GHz. The CPU consumes 40 percent less power because of the new 10 nanometer manufacturing process. The display is a 5.5 inch screen protected by Gorilla Glass 5. The fingerprint scanner unlocks the device in 0.2 seconds. The battery is rated at 3300 mAh, and has the signature feature of OnePlus, the Dash Charge. The company claims that the battery charges quickly enough to provide “a day’s power in half an hour.”
There are dual cameras on the back. One is a 20 MP shooter with an aperture of F/2.6, and the other is 16 MP with an aperture of F/1.7. This is one of the widest apertures in smartphone cameras, allowing for faster photographs, and better results in low light. The cameras allow for a bokeh like effect for capturing superior portraits. OnePlus really focused on the cameras with this iteration of its flagship.
The phone will be available in Midnight Black and Slate Gray at launch, which indicates that more colour variations may be available down the line. A number of new accessories and lifestyle products have also been launched. The India launch is scheduled to take place in two days time, on 22 June, with the pop up events in four cities. This is a device created for the fans, and built using the feedback by the devout users. Even the box now says “Created together with our fans” on the back.
